I'll take a closer look in the weekend (not a lot of time ATM, I'm
supposed to do some work and preparing Ark Linux alpha 11 for release ;)
), but as a first thought:

My code doesn't touch anything other than detection, and the change is
right; without it, OSS emulation is preferred over native ALSA, causing
problems with quite a few ALSA drivers.

I tend to think this is a bug in alsa-lib (which isn't used if OSS
emulation is used...) on the reporter's hardware or maybe alsa-lib version
(I can't reproduce the problem here on ALSA 1.0.4 with snd-intel8x0).

I'm fairly certain the same problem will happen if autodetection is turned
off and ALSA is selected with the older audioalsa9.cc - so the problem has
always been there and just wasn't triggered because native ALSA wasn't
useed.

Please check if this assumption is true.
