[Bug 55426] file open menu does not display any file

More observations with this issue:

a) noatun shows in the file open menu and successfully plays:
wav, ogg (that are all the types I can test)
b) noatun does *not* display in the file open menu and does *not* play:
   mp3
c) libarts_mpeglib etc. are all there. No program or library I checked
shows any unresolved references via ldd.
d) when noatun is invoked from the command line with an mp3 file name
as argument, it starts up, the status symbol appears in the panel, but
the player goes to status "stopped". Nothing else happens, pressing
"play" does not have any effect.
e) There are *no* error messages of any kind. Not on the command line,
not in .xsession-errors, not anywhere else one might think of.
f) Other stuff which some people on the net suggested, are also all
   there, e.g. lame, mpeglib, mp123, ...
g) This happens on a more or less clean SuSE 7.3 system with KDE3.1
installed from the rpm packages provided on the SuSE web site.
h) All the above points apply identically to kaboodle.
i) There exists, besides artsplay, a program mpeglibartsplay in /opt/kde3,
which works. It plays wav, ogg *and* mp3 !!
j) I have no problem to play mp3 with any other application I have,
and I have a lot of them: mplayer, xmms, mpg123, splay, ...

Any help or suggestions what I could check on my system?
