problem playing video files...

Hi, 
I'm having trouble playing avi,mpeg etc files using Kboodle or Noatun
I assume that the required codec is not in place...
I looked at the listed returned by arts and I DONOT have the video codecs 
installled....My question is, how do I install these codecs,
or am I totally off base here?
