These approaches would seem the best for me, as it would "officialise"
some of the patches for developers, while leaving the freedom of use for
each of them.

This could be done, but I see several issues with this approach:
- The dependency tree would have to be modified for all kde ports (but
doable)
- The port would have to be updated periodically, with the risk of
having a pace not satisfying for the various people working on it
- Anyway, developers would still have to use their own version, as they
are coding on top of it.
- The whole process would have to be repeated for other ports if/when
other ports must also be patched (e.g. kde-runtime, kdepim, ...)

I am definitely against that one. Including developing patches in the
port would imply that the portfile would have to be updated
periodically, forcing all users to update for things they are anyway not
using.
