I'm somewhat new to mac and how it works, but on linux they are installable into different paths, and the rpath of the binary helps the loader know which .so file(s) to load. On windows whatever version is in the path (or next to the binary itself) is loaded, is there no similar system available on mac ?

please support this change to be made for the qt[45]-mac ports. (I hope trac will be online soon again, so that I can tell you the ticket number.)

That’s great.

What is the policy of macports itself? does it only install everything into some prefix and have a policy not to touch system paths such as ~/Library/Application Support/<APPNAME>", "/Library/Application Support/<APPNAME>". "<APPDIR>/../Resources" which is used for DataLocation and "~/Library/Application Support", "/Library/Application Support" which is used for GenericDataLocation in QStandardPaths?

Yes, all of that needs to get organised properly. The applications get installed in /Applications/MacPorts/KDE4/ and files can well be stored
in the relevant Resources directories. The “Application Support” folders can also be used, but I think all of this needs to be discussed in
detail in order to make sure that all apps will be able to smoothly upgrade without destroying or overwriting each others files.

Greets,
Marko
