If you need to know the version of an application, then checking that 
application is likely the best thing to do :-)

Alternatively to checking an application's version by running its version 
command, you could look at the application's package.

E.g. on Debian
apt-cache show dolphin   
Package: dolphin
Version: 4:15.08.3-1
