Howdy,
I live in rural Quebec (prior, I lived in rural Colorado) and there's
no hope of ever getting high speed. I used Satellite (awful) for a
while. Once the village got DSL, I replicated what we did in
Colorado:
o Find a `friendly' home you can `see' from your home - which has
high speed. :)
o Get an outdoor enclosure for your DSL modem (and network gear)
and install a new phone line (dry if possible - no data)
o Setup a point-to-point wireless connection from your home to the
other home. Ubiquiti gear is cheap yet awesome.
Here are some ping times on my wireless 6KM link:
