If that doesn't cure it, another thing may be helpful - if you run 'alsamixer' 
in konsole you may see all your channels and be able to set it.  If you see 
only a single pulseaudio channel, look at the shortcuts supplied (top right, 
IIRC) and one of them, F5 or F6, I think, allows you to check all the channels 
on your soundcard.

If you do use this, keyboard arrows navigate, and M mutes or unmutes.
