I too am running a Slackware 13.0 box:
AMD 3700 +
1GB Memory
Nvidia 7300GS Video Card
Nvidia 185.18.36 video Driver
DSL connection from ATT
Vanilla Slackware 13.0 with only a few programs I have
added, e.g., Open Office, Opera,
I had read about all the slowness of KDE 4.x but went ahead
with 4.2.4 as shipped by Patrick Volkerding. I have never
looked back. I have desktop effects enabled (my desktop
setup is again pretty much vanilla; I changed the wallpaper,
set up a screen saver and chose oxygen as my theme. The
only slowness I have noticed is in Open Office. But, it
wasn't the fasted app on my box when I had 3.5.10.
I see in the 1 Mar 2010 Slackware 13.0 current changelog
that Patrick has advanced to KDE 4.3.5. His has always been
one of the more conservative distributions. But, it just
works. As others have suggested, it probably is related to
your video setup.
