[kde-linux] How do I add my own item to the main launcher menu?

Running 4.4.5, and want to add my own item, a shell script, to the main
launcher menu. Am somewhat dumbfounded that it's either impossible or at
least very hard to figure out how to do this.  With all the attention
paid to customizability...?

BTW, have switched that menu to "classic" mode - don't like the new
"kickoff" style, if that makes a difference.
