See if this helps.  Go to the System Setting screen, the little wrench 
and a screwdriver on mine.  Then in that click on Notifications.  Then 
at the top where the tabs are, click Player Settings.  You can turn the 
volume down there and I think that will still let you play a mp3 or 
whatever with sound.  I think this just turns down the sound for the 
things you want to mute.

You may can also just select No Audio Output to.  That may work.  Sort 
of like a mute button I guess.

Give that a try and see if that helps.  I hope that works for you.
