I have had problems too, although not the exact same issue.

I had to start over with KDM; delete the contents of: 
"$KDEDIR/share/config/kdm" and install KDM again.  Then you need to 
edit: "$KDEDIR/share/config/kdm/kdmrc" to set:

	AllowRootLogin=true

You now have the default configuration and should then be able to login 
as: "root" using KDM.

Then run: "systemsettings" and reconfigure: Login Manager.
