A further update:  I have tested this on LXDE and Xfce4 and KDE itself 
and the same problem occurs. korgac (or whatever it is called) is not 
activated from the system tray on any of these DE/WMs.  Now whether this 
is because of some background library, I don't know, but if you have any 
suggestions on ways of debugging this, I am more than happy to check it out.
