Jim - not answering your question, but this is relevant.  I had a long 
conversation with Carsten a week or two back.  The Mandriva version is running 
on this laptop (Mandriva 2009.1), but only if I set my video card to use XAA, 
which is unfortunate because XAA causes other problems on the laptop.  If I 
set it to EXA, which solves my other problems, Kuickshow gives serious screen 
corruption.

We established that this is not true for all ATi or Intel cards, but Carsten 
would appreciate any feedback on whether the issue occurs with other cards.

Meanwhile, are you sure that digikam + kipi-plugins does not allow you to add 
metadata?  I can't test it at the moment, but I thought it did.
