Preview should (and I think, does not) slow anything down, since the icon is 
shown until the preview is available. I does consume some resources, of 
course, so some battery-users might want it off. Other than that, I find it hard 
to explain why preview defaults off.

And that does not explain why per-folder setting is the default, either. Imho, 
per-folder settings are just plain confusing, and I am hardly a newbie :) I 
can see why some powerusers might want it, but I fail to see the casual-user 
usecase. But them, I am no usability expert.

I rest my case ;)
