Are you sure about this? I did this:
1. Logged in on tty1, and run setterm
2. Logged out
3. Changed to tty2, and logged in
4. Left the computer alone, without getting a blank screen
I'm not sure what you mean by "current instance of term". How did you
get a blank screen after calling setterm?
