KDE 4 is a lot slower on mine too and I have a Nvidia video card.  I 
don't have compiz, whatever that is, on either that I know of.  KDE4 is 
usable but it is slower.  I plan to upgrade my video card whenever KDE 4 
is able to work for me.  I'm hoping that will help.  I have a AMD 2500+ 
CPU and 2Gbs of ram so those should be OK.
