THANK YOU for an EXTREMELY prompt reply.  In fact, I am running KDE 
4.2.2, so this may well do the trick.  Unfortunately, I do not yet 
understand the plasmoids at all -- so I have no idea of how to apply 
your suggestion.  Could you give a something of a step-by-step tutorial?
