[kde-linux] desktop switching shortcuts using /^Win+KP_[1-9]$/

I'm new to the list, so please forgive me if I've breached protocol here. Also, if I have breached protocol, please feel free to educate me on what I did and how I might prevent it in the future.
On to the question, along with some history.
In 2006, I liberated an AMD64 XP box with Gentoo Linux. I've been using GNU/Linux and KDE ever since, and am now running KDE 3.5.9. Over the course of time, I found myself in a position to be a web developer (LAMP deployment). The development machine, however, was/is M$ Vista based. Though dual-headed, I found I needed the functionality of multiple desktops on said machine, as I had been enjoying on my home machine. A nifty little Vista utility allows me that, though it's not nearly as powerful/capable as that inherent with GNU/Linux/X11/KDE.
So, with the history told:
I can shortcut directly to a virtual desktop on the Vista box using Win+KP_[1-9]. Setting the same shortcuts in KDE doesn't work. Using Win+F[1-9] works fine, though.
Is there a problem with my home machine configuration that the Win+KP_[1-9] keystrokes are unrecognized? Are they being eaten by some other process? The numeric keypad is just so bloody convenient. If I have to, I'll change my work conf to Win+F[1-9], but I'd rather use the Win+KP_[1-9] paradigm as it easier for me.
Thanks,
Henry
PS: As a BTW, does anyone know how to get KDE to respond to the windows key in such a manner that, if not used in combination, it brings up the KDE menu? Thanks!
