Thanks for the clue Werner... But I'm fairly certain that whatever I've
done in the past didn't involve stopping hal... It is certain that I
didn't get the pleasure of using a nice clean a command line solution. 
And as you say, it might break something else, So I think I'll try
Kevin's suggestion first but I'm putting this whole thread in my personal
clues archive. So if his suggestion doesn't do it, I'll try this next...
