Just an update for today!

Right had the drive out and looked at the label.

Liteon LH-20-A1P487C-B  Date of manufacture 01/07 ie January 2007.   
Brand new but its already 12 months old out of the box.

I tried again today with a 4Gb data backup to a DVD.   Burns just fine 
but no verify.
