Rather than downloading source code, just install the kubuntu-desktop package. 
You can either do this from the package manager (Synaptic), or from the 
command line with:
$ sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop

You will then be able to choose whether to use KDE or GNOME each time you log 
in.
