You need to check it in the environment used by the KDE session, e.g. through
ALT-F2 or adding the output to startkde itself.
If you open a terminal window, it will get a new shell and it in turn will
read its configuration files. This can lead to a different envirnoment since
the shell executing startkde is usually a login shell and does not read the
same configuration files.
