Setting up Imap (on whatever machine is most convenient) is the best
way to go.  Its a standardized approach, not a hack, and with a modicum
of inward routing on your router you can access it from anywhere, even
while traveling.

Once set up, you can simply 
1) Add the Imap server to Kmail
2) Add the Imap server to any other clients (Even (horrors) Outlook)
3) Drag entire local folders to the Imap account (sub)folders.
4) Delete all local mail folders from the other clients.
5) Plan, Schedule, and Implement a Backup scheme.

I've done this with SLES and also with 10.2 using Cyrus.
Its rock solid, and I even access it from my cell phone.
