While it is true that Firefox uses XFT and KDE uses FreeType, I doubt 
that that is the problem.

First, do you have Anti-Aliasing turned on in KDE.  In the Control Center:

	Appearance & Themes -> Fonts

Check the box: "Use anti-aliasing for fonts"
