Hi,
If / is really read-only you won't be able to log in. Check if this is true with:
$ mount
and see if the options for / say 'rw' or 'ro'.
To modify how the root file system is mounted edit the /etc/fstab file.
Strange enough - this shouldn't be happening... maybe when you updated the kernel, the fstab file got overwritten?
