[kde-linux] Can't login via kde - hangs when "initializing peripherals"

My problem is that I don't know enough about KDE to
know where to look to determine if either of these
possibilities is true. Nor would I know what to do 
if they were!

I use the FC5 gui interface which (I presume) hands over to
whatever manager (KDM or GDM) that you choose (i.e. Gnome or 
KDE).
