[kde-linux] Can't login via kde - hangs when "initializing peripherals"

The symptoms could indicate a difference in the environment when startkde is 
called from the login manager and when called from a shell.

Both methods you described as working involve a interactive shell, whereas the 
shell executing startkde from KDM or GDM is not interactive and might not 
have read the same environment configuration files.

Another possibility I can think of is a missing (not yet started) D-Bus 
session bus in the case of launching from the login manager. The distributor 
might have not added to all login manager startup routines

Do you use KDM or GDM or a different login manager?
