[kde-linux] Accident loses sound

I accidentally powered off a running kde session yesterday.  Since then I have 
lost some aspects of sound.  I can play any of the sounds 
in /usr/share/sounds, and even preview them, but I no longer hear when a new 
email message arrives.  Similarly, kpatience has lost sound.  Nothing looks 
wrong in kcontrol > Sound & Multimedia.  Rebooting has made no difference.  
I'm totally stuck now on what else to look for.  Any ideas, anyone, please?
