[kde-linux] How did new install pickup old settings?

I recently did a new install of Slackware Linux to 10.2
which runs KDE 3.4 instead of 3.3.
Only my /home partition was the same but before, the install, I made
sure to change the name (while X not running) of ~/.kde/ to ~/.kde.mar8
and ~/.kderc to ~/.kderc.mar8.
in order to have a nice clean install.
Imagine my surprise when the first time KDE ran, all my settings and
icons from KDE 3.3 re-appeared!
Does KDE have the ability to search out configuration files with changed
names and create duplicates with the proper names?
