[kde-linux] KDE 3.5.1: Display Configuration

I just acquired SUSE Linux 10.1. I installed it with the KDE 3.5.1
desktop. Unfortunately, it appears that an old problem has
resurfaced: the display is "locked" at 1024x768.

During the last phase of the installation, SaX correctly identifies
that I have an nVidia FX 5200 video adapter and that the monitor is a
ViewSonic VP201M. SaX correctly identifies that the display can
operate at 1600x1200.

The VP201M is an old LCD display. When queried by kwm or kdm, it
reports its current video settings instead of providing a list of
possible video settings. As a result, KDE only permits the display
to operate at 1024x768.

I recall this occurring with one release of SuSE Linux 9 and an
earlier version of KDE but can't remember how to fix this problem.
Running a 20 inch 1600x1200 display at 1024x768 is a terrible waste
and causes far too much scrolling.

Does anyone recall this issue and it's solution?
