Thanks to those who responded on this. I tried setting up ksysguard,
but found some serious deficiencies(?). For one thing, I don't always
want to monitor the same interface. If I move from wired to wifi, it
would be nice if ksysguard would do the Right Thing(tm) without my
having to reconfigure. Also, the colors seem to be off. It seems to be
showing me received data with the color that I configured for
transmitted data. Weird.

And perhaps the biggest black eye: I use dialup at home. It seems that
if my modem0 interface is configured down (as will happen when
disconnecting), ksysguard will then disable its display (fine), but when
reconnecting it doesn't resume. I tried twiddling with the controls
(Resume Update, etc), but it doesn't resume. It continues to show
something that looks like a plug with a lightning bolt in the upper
right corner of the box.

Thanks also for the pointer to knetload. It looks like it could be
good, but there's no package in SUSE 10.1, so I have to build from
source, and haven't gotten around to it yet.

Dave
