In case anyone is interested, I found two statements in my /etc/X11/Xresources
file that appear to be the culprit:

XMathematica*XmText.translations:
XMathematica*Text.translations:

I added those lines some time ago on recommendation from Wolfram support because of a "delete-next-character" warning message problem issued by the Mathematica front end.  See

I don't know what those statements do, but I'll leave it for Wolfram to resolve.  If anyone has any comment on this, what those statements do, et cetera, I  welcome it.
