I removed kmplayer, but I think you can use the "File Associations" module in
Konqueror's configuration to set a higher priority for mplayer than for
kmplayer, by moving it above kmplayer in the list of apps for a given type of
file.
I also wonder whether Arts is having an effect on this, since some people are
able to listen to content that others of us are not able to access in
Konqueror. I have Arts enabled in Control Center ("enable the soundsystem"
is checked) but in Konqueror's "Configure > Plugins > plugins tab" I have
unchecked the checkbox "Use artsdsp to pipe sound through aRts"

That is what happened here, I installed kmplayer and then the functionality
was broken, but once I removed it, RealPlayer again played the content on the
BBC link that was posted yesterday.

That is why I have three browsers installed. Each one has solutions for the
puzzles the others create.
