I never got that - the play button gets depressed, as it were, but nothing
ever happens, no sound, and no way out without killing it.

I tried that, and although Mozilla tells me it is installed, when I try to
play one of the .rpm files it says that it can't find a helix player.
Firefox just behaves as before.

Have you tried, in kcontrol > components > file associations to search
for .ram (and also .rpm), then see whether you can get the helix player to
the top of the list?
Do you use kaffeine for other things? If you only use it for one or two
things, I'd remove it from the play lists altogether, then re-add it (using
'open with') when I needed it.
I haven't had much time to play with this this afternoon. It would be nice to
get it sorted, although most of the broadcasts that I want do work with the
stand-alone player. One thing I want to try is getting rid of the old real
player plugin.
