yeah, sort of. some basic setup and a few session types are hardcoded
(those which are hardcoded in kdm as well, but there you can override
them). you can also have an Xsession script heavily screwed up^W^Wedited
by your distributor. 
the .desktop stuff is only a convetion from the pov of the Xsession
script. oh, wait, the name Xsession is only a convention, too - it is
the Session script, in fact. oh, well ...
