At the moment it requires setting $KDEDIRS in startkde to include the desired 
profile-directories. 

For KDE 3.3 you will be able to create a file /var/run/kde-user-profile/<UID> 
that contains one or more profile names (one per line) that apply to that 
user, the idea here is that such file will be created as part of the login 
process based on ldap information. Also for KDE 3.3 I plan to add something 
similar but then based on a single file in /etc/

I may be able to backport these changes to KDE 3.2.3
