[Kde-imaging] Facebook Import... does almost nothing

When I try to use the Facebook Import plugin from digiKam it does
nothing more than start the 'progress bar' bouncing back and forth.
No apparent images downloaded or significant network traffic.  It does
log me in to Facebook and does show my list of friends in the Import
dialog.  My searches led me to:

where there is reference to "Direct Upload" permission on Facebook.
For the life of me I can't find anything about this on Facebook.  Can
anyone here expand on how to give the app that permission?  I have to
admit that my 15+ years of excessive web browsing somehow doesn't
translate to usage of the Facebook site...  :[  I end up boggling at
it almost every time I try to use it.
