First of, thank you for the quick response.  I have looked at the changelog,
but could not see (it is not a small changelog for the time from from 0.2 ->
0.6) where this particular issue is noted.

The problem with installing from a tar ball, is that it seems I require a full
KDE development environment as neither the install section in the README nor
the installation instructions per the kipi web site works.  The link from the
INSTALL file simply explain how to set up a KDE development environment. 

This is a non-trivial undertaking for a end user that used to have a working
exporter.

I have found 0.5 in the next release of ubuntu, but trying to use that only
ends in dependency hell right back to gcc.  Using the correct repository works,
but it basically want to replace my system.

Do you perhaps have any other ideas of how to fix this particular problem ?
