I fixed this issue just a few minutes ago. Here is the solution I found. As per my last message, if I used what digikam considered the default email client-on my unit thunderbird-then digikam would open thunderbird, but would not attach a file. If I set the digikam mail client to thunderbird, the the binary path reported /usr/bin/mozilla-thunderbird would return an invalid path message. After thinking about this, I did a whereis in console and found that the correct binary path should be /usr/bin/thunderbird. I then set this path under the thunderbird selection and digikam would open thunderbird and attach a file. I am still puzzled as to what the problem is, but this workaround does work for me.
