Well in this case is not a problem of payng or not. The kernel is a critical update, so automatically you can
update (from mcc) the kernel-source but not the kerned itself. So you have to choose it manually.

Because you didn't update the nvidia modules, you run the old kernel and
that meant you have the old modules.

That shows you've already updated (automatically) the kernel source package, but not the the kernel.
I mean you need the kernel source to rebuild nvidia, but the kernel source of the kernel you're running.
Be aware for that in the future :)
