Hello Aindriú Mac Giolla Eoin,
> She asked me to help with translations and over the past while I have
sent her a large number of translated strings (well over 10,000). Some
of these were uploaded, but Charlotte has unfortunately gone quiet
recently and the remaining files have not been committed.
10,000 strings is a lot of work on both sides (translator and
committer), depends how Irish (ga) team works. In German team
translations are first at proof reading stage. This takes time, also
translations are sometimes need to be corrected and proof read again…
Also committing of translated files needs sometimes additional actions,
because from start of translation till commit *.po files in SVN could be
updated and translated files are then "outdated" => this requires manual
merging → also a lot of work with 10,000 strings!

by someone understanding this language.

translation team so that I can maintain them directly?
There is a Wiki page for it:
https://community.kde.org/Infrastructure/Get_a_Developer_Account
Please note: There are some preconditions to be fulfilled.
Best regards
