String exception request for Spectacle 24.05 beta

I would like an exception so that I can cherry-pick the following
commits to the release/24.05 branch. The strings are error messages. I
would like them to be in the release so that users get more useful
feedback and write more descriptive bug reports or understand when
certain behaviors are expected.
