1) Please close KMail + Kaddressbook, open a konsole and enter:
$ KDE_LANG=en_US kaddressbook
$ KDE_LANG=en_US kmail

2) Then follow the steps you provided to reproduce this issue.

If you still have the error you reported, this is no problem of the german
translation.
