I'm not sure we have real experts on so low level problems in the software 
stack. For instance we've no kernel hackers here AFAIK, which doesn't help 
having a clear view on the best path.

That said I would guess a good solution would be as you propose to rework the 
driver to expose the proper interfaces to the outside world.
