I have a similar problem with kajongg (Python). If available, it uses the KDE
libraries, but it can be used without. I wrote some simple replacements in
Python which do most of what kajongg needs.

Since it seems that PyKDE will never be ported to KDE 5, kajongg will sooner
or later not use KDE libraries anymore.

But at least kajongg will mostly still look and feel like a KDE application.
IMHO the user experience is more important than the technical underground.
