The way it traditionally works is you start holding the direction you 
want to go before you can actually go that way (which apparently works 
fine in the current implementation).

Actually... it occurs to me, the biggest argument against is that 
traditionally you cannot stop in the middle of a passage (only when you 
hit a wall). Changing the input method would change that, which 
constitutes a fairly substantial change in the game mechanics.
