Personally, I find the word "appearance" to be a bit weak in the
context of game themes. Changing the appearance of the desktop, does
just that: it makes things look different. Changing the game theme, on
the other hand, can change the entire feel of a game. It can change
the way you identify with the "hero". It can take the game to a new
environment. It can even rearrange the widgets in certain cases.
"Appearance" just doesn't quite capture that.

But having given it some thought, I'll have to concede that, all other
things considered, "Appearance" is probably the best option. It is
consistent with other areas of the desktop and it leaves little room
for confusion.

(On a related topic, I recently had a lengthy debate with myself when
I decided to rename "Rule Sets" to "Game Types" in Killbots.)
