Dear KDEGames,
Please let me introduce to you the newest advancement in Linux game management
– DJL
Now, some of you have already had an opportunity to get acquainted with this
useful application during one of our past meetings. For those who hadn't –
DJL is a games-only repository modeled after Steam which is a similar app for
Windows (may also be compared to Nintendo on-line gaming service Wii-Ware).
It's done in Python using QT4 bindings and therefore is 80% KDE4 compatible.
It's developer – Diablo150 – has joined our channel some time ago hoping
to gain some support from us, and possibly even include DJL into KDEGames
extragear package. He is very community oriented, extroverted, cooperative,
and all in all great fellow.
Now, going back to the application itself, let me give you some insights. DJL
only (currently) works with binary file packages. It downloads those from on-
line repos, unpacks them, and prepares for use. None of thees actions require
any root access, which arguably is a good thing, but in the same time does no
library compatibility checking, which arguably is a bad thing.
Of course, any and all of you are invited to check DJL out, before you voice
your personal opinion about it's usefulness. You can obtain the code from:
http://djl.tuxfamily.org/ (do beware though, the site is in French :P and just
in case you didn't know Téléchargement is Friench for Download ;) ) You'll
also need Python-QT4 libs (and Aaron said scripting languages are a good
thing).
Now, I was going to suggest, if we do decide to add this one to KDEGames, we
can use DJL as our own games launcher :) as it has a nice GUI, and allows for
screenshots and descriptions.
Opinions?

Best wishes,
Eugene [it-s]
