I cannot speak for others, but I think the status bar has been used because
it was already part of the programming environment.

I've done some work to put useful information on screen in kgoldrunner -- I 
think it is more in line with the spirit of the game. I think the important 
information is all on the screen now, so it could be removed at least in 
KGoldrunner, if that is preferred.
